We often wonder what God’s will is for is in our lives. “What does God want me to do about school? About my job? About this house?” And so on.
This isn’t bad, but it is misdirected. God has made His will, in general, abundantly clear, and it’s His general will that He’s most concerned with our obedience.
What is His general will? It’s essentially just the Gospel:
Live a holy life, transformed and empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Love God and live a life of worship.
Love others as God has loved you and do good works to bless others in the name and for the glory of God.
Share the Gospel with the lost, especially the story of your life’s transformation.
Disciple fellow believers, showing them the truth and power of God’s word and sharing your life with them, especially the believers God has transformed through your witness.
Now, if you’re passionately, diligently, effectively obeying every point of God’s general will, then God’s specific will for your life will be made clear. In fact, it will be better than clear. It will be an obvious, natural flow of one thing to another, as focus not on your singular life but on God’s plan for everyone’s life.
Yes, God does have a plan for our lives, but it’s a fairly general one. If we focus on following that, the details will be worked out as well.
