Killer-Isms | #9 Technicism

This is the final week in a nine-week class entitled “The Killer-Isms: A Christian Look at Lethal Philosophies.” This session looks at technicism, which is a futuristic philosophy that seeks to evolve humanity beyond biology to technology.
From Pastor Phil:
Technicism: Working Definition
Technicism is a belief in the progressive power of technology to save us. Since technology has solved so many problems in our society, the basic assumption that many people make is that this pattern will continue until technology finally solves all of our problems. The technicist believes that an increasing reliance upon technology will help humanity rise from the confines and conflicts of modern society to a place of utopian peace. Most people believe this, to some degree, assuming that things are getting better with each technological advance. The technicists aren’t look forward to flying cars and moving sidewalks, though. They are looking for a world without poverty, hunger, war, disease—all the major headlines on the nightly news—technicists are confident that technology has the power to fix all of these.
Solving all of humanity’s problems with a few hard drives and processors might seem like a lot, but technicists are just getting started. There is a growing number of technicists who have begun to not only predict but also advocate for humanity to evolve beyond flesh and blood to become “transhuman,” a human mind/consciousness within a technological shell. In essence, the desire is for bodies and brains that cannot wear out and die. Technicists are searching for eternal life through technology, something they refer to as the “singularity.”
